The project draws on the skills and expertise of a range of public and private sector partners. Roles and contributions to the project include:

Developing a hydrogen system

Industrial gases specialist BOC are developing a 1MW electrolyser which will produce hydrogen to be used as fuel for the bus fleet. Scottish & Southern Energy Power Distribution (SSEPD) will use a specially designed control system in conjunction with network monitoring, to gain valuable learning on hydrogen's impact on the grid. Scotland Gas Networks (SGN) is working with SSEPD on grid balancing.

Bus manufacture

Bus and coach manufacturer Van Hool is supplying the 10 fuel cell buses for the project.

Ballard Power Systems is developing the hydrogen fuel cells for the buses.

Dantherm, which is part of the Ballard family, will service the buses.

Bus operators

The Aberdeen buses will be operated on First and Stagecoach routes in the city starting in 2014.

First will operate four fuel cell buses on the x40 route, and Stagecoach will operate six fuel cell buses on the x17 route.

Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise are supporting this project, recognising the long-term benefits of investing in hydrogen infrastructure.

Element Energy is co-ordinating work streams in the multi-phase work programme and undertaking technical reviews and analysis.

Planet Energie will be responsible for analysing the data which is collected during the project, on availability of the buses and the refuelling station.

Also involved is Innovate UK (Formerly the Technology Strategy Board)
